The laptop came with Windows Vista Home Basic preinstalled, although there is an option to get it with Windows Media Center Edition 2005. All two options are 32bit.
We will later cover in-depth the hardware specifications one by one.

Hello, I have an ACER ASPIRE 5051 AWXMi mee too and I am using Ubuntu 6.10
I am planing to upgrade CPU to TL-64...TL-56 prefering 65nm ROI to get the max from the X2 technology but in order to do that it is necessary check the RAM specification exactly. I found some pages very interesting:
upgrading to a TL-XX CPU and memory DDR2 specification
MK-36 technology
MK-36 specification
CPU cool and quiet with Linux
If you like post these links
:-)
Hi Roberto
Please let us know if you're doing the upgrade and how is it going. It would be perfect if you did some photos of the laptop dissasembly and the CPU replacement.
I'm gathering information about the processor and will create an article about it soon. Your links are really useful.
I was previously playing with powernowd on Debian Etch and now I want to investigate what is the setup on Ubuntu an XP too. There is a drivers page in AMD's site with downloads for the current MK-36 processor in the following:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13349,00.html
The "AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16" seems to be the latest driver controlling the power saving features of the chip..
Just in case anyone is still looking to upgrade a processor in an acer 5051, after much searching i finally found a how to guide, and upgraded from a Turion 64 2ghz to a Turion 64x2 1.8ghz, runs like a new computer now, even vista is happy.

Ive upgraded my Acer Aspire 5051
to
2Gb RAM
2x 1.6Ghz Dual Core Turion
120Gb 7200rpm SATA300 HD
works like a dream
used this guide:
http://www.computer-adviser.com/acer-aspire-5050-processor-upgrade.html
though im trying to find out if the mobo/bios supports SATAII - it works but isnt any faster than SATAI
The laptop came with Windows Vista Home Basic preinstalled, although there is an option to get it with Windows Media Center Edition 2005.
I was very impressed at the speed the applications performed on the Netbook computer; performance was similar to my quad core desktop computer.
Just to add my experience in that the Acer Aspire 5051 seems to work fine with the 2.0GHz Turion 64 X2, specifically model number: TMDTL60HAX5DM
I believe that this model CPU uses 65nm technology.
It transforms the machine's performance, although the fan regularly starts and stops depending on load when the CPUs are running at full speed.
